Reflexology and the Common
Cold
By Laurie A. Saunders,

The forecast for this winter includes colds for
many of you. How can we help ourselves in the fight against infection?
Lets start at the beginning. Colds are caused by viruses that infect
the upper respiratory tract.
The person next to you sneezes or coughs, virus-bearing
droplets fly through the air and contaminate the environment. Yes, the
air into which that person sneezed , the phone he touched, even the clothes
you are wearing, are contaminated if you are close enough to this virus-laden
individual.
Following are some practical steps to take to
avoid the cold.
1. Distance is good. Move the infected person into their own space
as much as possible.
2. Avoid touching the infected person and objects which he may have
used.
3. Wash, wash, wash. Wash your hands frequently to avoid catching or spreading
the virus.
4. Stay home if you have a cold. Consideration for co-workers, friends
and other business people will make you a hero. Get plenty of rest, drink
lots of liquids (especially water, soups, diluted vegetable juices, herb
teas).
5. Arm yourself against the virus. Antioxidants such as Vitamin C, vitamin
E, selenium, zinc and beta-carotene can enhance immune functions. Two
herbs that are widely used for immune enhancing effects are Echinacea
angustifolia and Glycyrrhiza glabra (liqorice). Diagnosis and treatment
of illness should be discussed with your medical doctor.
A healthy, balanced body is important in the
fight against disease. Stress can impair the bodys ability to maintain
homeostasis (equilibrium) which makes our body very susceptible to disease.
The body is so busy dealing with the effects of continual or repeated
stress that its usual resistance declines below normal.
The nervous system begins to function normally
again allowing the body to relax which brings other biological systems
into balance. This balancing effect improves our overall health and
provides support for many of the bodys systems. Blood vessels relax,
allowing improved circulation of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues
and organs.
Reflexology also works with the lymphatic system
to help the body rid itself of toxins and impurities. Working various
reflexes and areas of the foot will help drain mucus from the nose and
sinuses, break up congestion in the chest, help reduce inflammation
and eliminate waste materials.
During the holiday season, treat yourself or
a loved one to the benefits of reflexology. A gift of health is a gift
of love. Always confer with your medical doctor for diagnosis and treatment
of illness before using any health products. |
